THE LEDGER — Episode 01: The Tenth Second
Duration: 90 seconds · Aspect: 9:16 vertical · Episode: 01/80
Arc: THE DESCENT (Ep 01–10) · ENTRY: a $4,200 entertainment line miscoded to R&D
COLD OPEN (0:00–0:06)
VISUAL: Mira flips a ledger open on a glass desk, red pen hovering. A single line catches her eye.
MIRA: "Ten seconds. That's all it takes to read a book that took a year to cook."
MIRA: "Most people see totals. I see the one line that lies."
SCENE 2 · SETUP — The Cleaner (0:06–0:30)
VISUAL: Vance Tower, 17th floor. Her boss slides a folder across; a decimal is off in travel expenses.
BOSS: "Calloway. The Albany trip. Fix the decimal, send it back."
MIRA: "A zero's missing. Forty-one thousand, not four thousand one hundred."
BOSS: "Then add the zero. We don't leave trails."
MIRA: "You know I don't sign what I can't read."
BOSS: "You read what I tell you to read."
MIRA: "I don't forge. I reconcile. There's a difference."
THEO (anonymous, on her phone): "You're the one who reads the lines. I've been looking for you."
MIRA: "Wrong number."
MIRA: "Cole's care runs through this building. I stay clean, he stays alive."
SCENE 3 · CORE CONFLICT — The Tenth Second (0:30–1:18)
VISUAL: She scans a subsidiary ledger. One entertainment line — $4,200 — sits coded under R&D.
MIRA: "Entertainment, miscoded to research. Cute."
MIRA: "But research held no events in March. So where did four thousand two hundred go?"
MIRA: "R&D booked zero travel all quarter. Yet here's a dinner for two. A strange dinner."
MIRA: "A line this small, nobody checks. That's exactly why it's the lie."
MIRA: "Follow it and it leads somewhere it shouldn't."
VISUAL: Slow-motion — her red pen circles the line. The figure 4,200 isolates, underlines itself. Silence drops to a heartbeat.
MIRA: "There. That's the lie."
She snaps a photo. Behind her, a door opens. Footsteps.
SCENE 4 · THE HOOK — The Sound at the Door (1:18–1:30)
VISUAL: Mira slides the ledger shut, photo sent to a burner. Footsteps stop behind her chair.
MIRA: "Forty-one seconds late, Marcus. You're slipping."
MARCUS: "Boss wants the folder. Now."
MIRA: "Tell Adrian the decimal's fixed. The other line? I'm still reading."
MIRA: "Every book has a first lie. This one just became mine."
VISUAL: She turns. Marcus's scarred brow catches the light.
MIRA (soft, to herself): "And I just found where the rot starts."
